Serviceable but inescapably redundant.. How does all this play out for those of us -- i.e., me -- who have not been staying up nights fretting over the origins of the X-Men and Women? The answer is: Fairly well.. Though the narrative is a conventional one, the well-acted, suspenseful story deals in fascinatingly murky morality and mines intriguing material from a historic and complex city.. One of the most intelligent and entertaining big-studio releases of the summer so far.. Dawn of the Planet...
